C. J. Cherryh is a favorite of mine.  She sets the standard for ALIEN (but
comprehesible) aliens.  Not people in funny suits, like most authors.  (If
you're looking for incomprehensible aliens, try "Solaris" by Lem).  She
does great fast paced action, and intricate political schemings (often in
the same novel!).  I can recommend everything she does, with the exception
of the Heroes in Hell noncense, and the Merovingen Nights anthologies
(which are weak but OK).
