Kay Hart (415) 336-3561 MENTOR GRAPHICS TO DELIVER EDA PRODUCTS ON SUN WORKSTATIONS MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- January 11, 1990 -- Sun Microsystems announced today that Mentor Graphics, the leading market supplier of electronic design automation (EDA) systems, has signed a letter of intent to make its products available on Sun's SPARC(TM)-based workstations. This announcement was made in conjunction with Mentor's agreement to acquire Silicon Compiler Systems Corp., an IC design vendor whose products are sold on the Sun platform. "Sun has built a large market in the EDA segment due to ow relationships with all the key vendors -- except Mentor. This agreement with Mentor finalizes our position as the leading workstation vendor in the EDA market," said Scott McNealy, Sun's chief executive officer. "The Sun platform appeals to Mentor and the other EDA vendors particularly because of SPARC, UNIX(R), and OPEN LOOK(TM). Software vendors and customers alike have endorsed SPARC systems as the hardware plafform of choice for EDA applications. We are delighted at this endorsement by Mentor." Before the Mentor/Sun agreement, Mentor supported a single hardware platform. Thomas Bruggere, CEO and chairman of Mentor Graphics, said, "We look forward to serving the market in the 1990s as an open, multi-vendor company. Our customers now have the ability to take advantage of Mentor's and SCS's combined technologies on the industry's leading platforms."
