Actually, the Left just wanted to destroy the meaning of the word "Marriage". 
Just like they want to destroy everything else.

But we already had a concept of "civil union".  This was all the legal stuff
from marriage - just not the social/religious aspect.  So there was no reason
for anything beyond that other than to destroy something.
