Many systems, mine included, had Usenet areas reflected as echo (conference) areas. FidoNet, generally is more like Usenet in that its echo areas were generally available to all callers. Only a certain area of FidoNet was similar to e-mail (the NetMail area) in that a message was addressed to a certain person at a certain Node number. It was private, whereas echo areas were not private (with a very few exceptions.)
