I wonder if it's true.. I've heard you can write in any name you want on a ballot and, as long as it's clear, it's a legal vote for that person. I recall hearing years back on one election where a lot of people didn't like the candidate running for either party there and, as a result, Mickey Mouse got several thousand votes..
