The website is posting cautions to amateurs around the world: Do not get too excited when you see the ship leave the harbor in Cape Town. As the saying goes, this is just a test. ** KICKER: GETTING 50 STATES ON 60 METRES - FROM SOUTH AFRICA JIM/ANCHOR: Our final story this week is about 60 metres, 50 American states, and 1 persistent South African amateur. We hear more from John Williams, VK4JJW. JOHN: It took four years, but Andre, ZED-S-2-ACP, finally worked all 50 of the United States on 60 metres, receiving the Worked All States award from the ARRL. Andre told Newsline that it was a big help to finally get access in South Africa to operate FT8 on 5.357 MHz, where most of the other FT8 operation takes place. He said access to that part of the band was only granted a little more than a year ago, so he had some catching up to do. Until then, the only other frequency, he said, was well below that location. He told Newsline [quote] "the best we could do, was advertise on the net, that we were listening on 5.357, but texting elsewhere." [endquote]. Using that methodology, he said, the response was minimal. His new achievement makes Andre the first South African amateur to have achieved that honour on 60 metres. He told Newsline he shares the achievement with W-ZERO-OS, and WB7S, who he said were [quote] "the last two chaps who made it happen after marathon attempts." [endquote] Andre particularly enjoys 60 meters, where he said he has also contacted and confirmed 60 countries, and recently worked number 61. He said "we have a good window on 60 metres daily, from about 0300 to about 0430. FT8 is the way to go, as voice contacts are non-existent." [endquote] Andre has worked hard at these contacts: He also earned a Worked All States for Digital JT65 in 2017, and in 1992, received the award for SSB on 20 metres. He is also the sole ZS operator who has a DXCC for satellite contacts too. For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm John Williams, VK4JJW. ** NEWSCAST CLOSE: With thanks to Alan Labs; Amateur News Weekly; AMSAT; the ARRL; Carol Laferty, K4SAF; CQ Magazine; Gallatin Ham Radio Club; Hap Holly and the Rain Report; Joseph Durnal, NE3R; Ohio-Penn DX Bulletin; QRZ.COM; Reading Radio Club; Southgate Amateur Radio News; Ted Randall's QSO Radio Show; Wireless Institute of Australia; WTWW Shortwave; and you, our listeners, that's all from the Amateur Radio Newsline.
