BEING WATCHFUL FOR UK'S WATCHKEEPERS

JIM/ANCHOR: Hams in the UK are marking SOS Radio Week - but the event
is neither a competition nor an emergency -- and it lasts for a whole
month. Jeremy Boot, G4NJH, explains.

JEREMY: SOS Radio Week has launched in the UK, and this annual
non-competitive event will last until the 31st of May.

Hams are being encouraged to register as official stations for the
month-long event, and raise public awareness of the work performed
by volunteer watchkeepers of the National Coastwatch Institution
(NCI), and the volunteers serving the Royal National Lifeboat
Institution (RNLI). The Radio Society of Great Britain noted that
both organisations [quote] "provide eyes around the coast of the UK to
observe, and report potential disasters unfolding that technology
cannot." [endquote]

The radio event coincides with the RNLI's fundraising activities.

Hams are able to participate in the radio week activations from home,
or at other locations, and can run their stations under individual,
club, or special event call signs. Operators are cautioned, however,
not to be on the air near a lifeboat, or coastwatch station without
first securing their permission.

QUADNET ARRAY WELCOMES THREE NEW NETS

JIM/ANCHOR: Those who follow trains and railroads know that at times,
routes have to be changed for various reasons. And the same applies to
ham radio traffic nets, as we hear from Jack Parker, W8ISH.

JACK: Three of the D-STAR Nets run by Daryl, WX4QZ, during the week are
on the move: They will be found on the QuadNet Array in the weeks ahead,
allowing users of D-STAR, DMR, and Yaesu Fusion, to check in.

The QCWA D-STAR Net will be the first to make the move effective May 5th.
The net will keep its timeslot at 5 p.m. United States Eastern Time on
Sunday. Participants do not have to be a member of the Quarter Century
Wireless Association to check in.
	
The next net to move will be the Food Net. That happens on the 18th of
May. The net moves to Saturdays at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The previous
Monday's net -- May 13 -- will be cancelled.

Finally, the Trains Net pulls into its new station starting on May 17.
It remains in its time slot at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Fridays, and it
will still provide a place for the discussion of anything and everything
related to trains and railroading. It also features a railroad trivia
question.

A ROYAL WELCOME FOR NEW THAI KING

JIM/ANCHOR: In Thailand, hams have welcomed the crowning of a new king,
with a radio celebration. Here's Jason Daniels, VK2LAW.

JASON: The Radio Amateur Society of Thailand has good reason for
postponing its May meeting to the second Sunday of the month: Members
will be activating Special Event Station HS10KING/mm, marking the
crowning of King Rama the Tenth. The station's scheduled operation
from May 4th through to the 6th, will be aboard a Royal Thai Navy
aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Thailand. Operations will be on the 40,
20, 15, and 10 metre HF bands, as well as 2 meters VHF. The activation
will also make use of the geostationary satellite Es'hail 2, launched
last year.

The club's meeting, meanwhile, has been postponed until Sunday May 12th,
and applications will be open for the upcoming Intermediate Class
examination.
