DAVE: The usual undergraduates were mostly gone from the Long Island, New York campus on Saturday, January 4th, but class was definitely in session. Forget liberal arts or political science: This was the 21st annual Ham Radio University, and it drew an enrollment of more than 300, many of whom were first-time attendees. These radio scholars selected their curriculum from more than 30 forums, and three hands-on workshops. The keynote speaker was Kris Bickell, K1BIC, the ARRL's manager of Lifelong Learning. Appealing to the perennial student inside almost all ham radio operators, he explained how to use the ARRL's new Learning Center with its online training options. HRU's full day of instruction was held on the campus of Long Island University-C.W. Post College in Brookville, and also served as the ARRL NYC-Long Island Section Convention. Along with popular programs repeated from previous years, there were new forums, including the planning, construction, and installation of HF antenna support structures; an overview of computer logging programs, and online techniques for learning Morse code. In place of diplomas, there was the promise of more QSL cards and, of course, there's always next year's Ham Radio University, which is already in the planning stages. (MEL GRANICK KS2G) ** SOUTH AFRICAN OPERATOR QUALIFIES FOR DXCC AWARD ON 2M PAUL/ANCHOR: A South African amateur well-known for his work on the VHF, UHF, and SHF bands, has qualified for his 2-metre DXCC award. John Sygo, ZS6JON, drew attention most recently for recent VHF/UHF/SHF and EME DXpeditions with the call signs Z21EME, 3DA0MB, and A21EME. He has also Elmered a number of hams with their EME stations, providing guidance, equipment, and phasing cables for VHF and UHF operation. John also operates and maintains a VHF/UHF beacon farm outside Johannesburg. We here at Newsline congratulate his achievement. (SOUTHGATE) ** YL RAISA SHARES HER RADIO JOURNEY VIA YOUTUBE PAUL/ANCHOR: If you love ham radio, there's nothing like social media to help you share that journey. Caryn Eve Murray, KD2GUT, spoke with one YL who has devoted a YouTube channel to her adventures. CARYN: "Hello my radio friends." With those four words, a YL named Raisa, call sign UB1AOA, cheerfully begins yet another conversation with the world. Raisa is from St. Petersburg, Russia, but calls QRZ most often as OH73ELK from a ham radio cottage on a Finnish island. Off the air, Raisa continues her dialogue with the world on a YouTube channel she created shortly after getting her radio license in December of 2018. She calls her videos "My Way to Ham radio." In more than a dozen short, episodes, she celebrates her new license, hikes to a SOTA summit, tries out radio orienteering, and cheers out loud after making QSO number 1,000 as part of the OH73ELK contest team. Raisa tells Newsline in an email: "I want to inspire new people, and then meet them on the air." She received her own inspiration from three men, including her own OM Alex, UA1AJD. Although they helped guide her way in ham radio, she hopes that sharing her love of the hobby, will prove beyond question that radio isn't just for boys and men. In fact, sometimes it isn't for men at all. As Raisa tells Newsline -- almost gleefully: "When we arrive at the cottage, Alex has no way to go on the air, because I am there with permanent pileups!" For Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Caryn Eve Murray, KD2GUT. PAUL/ANCHOR: To find Raisa (Rii-e-sa)'s videos, search for YL Raisa at youtube.com, thats Y-L space R-A-I-S-A. ** BREAK HERE: Time for you to identify your station.
