It turns out that dictating is faster and the com- position modality of the documents is not able to be identi- fied by independent readers. This work by Gould follows a series of studies on dictation (Gould, 1980, in Cognitive Processes in Writing, Ed. Gregg and Steinberg). My own work composition and editing suggests that many of the characteristics of editing are common across modality (i.e. in text editing or speech editing). I have not sup- ported Gould's report that close to a a constant two-thirds of composition time is spent planning. My estimates range from 49% of the session to 90% of the session.
