The consensus among manufacturers is that one needs such a device as classified as a 'rapid pointing mechanism'. As to what is best, touch screen, track ball, mice and other rodents, touch pads and bit pads, there is no major conclusive 'hey this is the best'. Most shall be offering a mechanism to incorporate a bit pad, or data tablet as well as a mouse. The key question here is what is most appropriate for what you are doing? As for personal experience, I have been using a touch-pad connected to an Apollo computer. The advantage is that I don't have to hunt down my mouse, since the touchpad is next to the keyboard. The disadvantage is that I would prefere the mouse since I'm most confortable with that class of pointing device. So there really is no single solution. I would like to see people in software design come up with some ideas on how to make the most of these toys.
