I and several other people have consistently seen this happen, from Jackals to Trolls. Any comments from the Omniscient Author? [2] Monsters can show up at levels lower than they "should" in treasure rooms. I've clearly seen Floating Eyes at Level 1, A at 2, L at 6, and R at 8 in treasure rooms. Otherwise, the n to n+9 rule [seems to] holds, except for U and up. [3] Whoever said "if you can't hack Levels 9-15 without armor, you have no business living" is absolutely right. I strip just before going down to Level 9, and resume armor at level 16 or so. Also, it pays to have several suits of armor, and put on the 2nd best at Level 13 (for trolls). Then on Level 19, discard all but one. [4] Removing armor does take two turns. Thus the notion of "I'll wear this stuff until the rust monster comes" doesn't work. However, leather armor works fine (at least in later versions. Try it out sometime on yours.); and is worth wearing from Levels 9-12 or so. [5] Every time you see a scroll, DON'T PICK IT UP!! Leave it on the ground, and go find a monster. Walk back to the scroll, and use some diagonal commands, like this: ..... ..@H. ..... ..H.. ..?@H ..?.. .@H.. .@?.. (1) (2) (3a) (3b) In case 3a, the scroll is ordinary. Kill the hobgoblin, and go on about your business. In case 3b, though, the scroll is the exceedingly valuable and rare Scare Monster. Kill the hobgoblin, pick up the scroll, and CALL IT something before yyou forget. Then, when you're in trouble, drop it (don't READ it, for chrissake -- the maniacal laughter is monsters laughing at your stupidity), and watch it save your ass in the most powerful fashion any magic item can. A friend of mine got 20000+ Experience points from ONE such scroll. So learning not to jump on scrolls is hard, and sometimes wandering monsters will grab them before you can find some- thing to test them with, and sometimes you'll get killed before you can use it. Life is tough all over. And the first time you successfully use one, it'll repay your effort dramatically. [6] I try out rings as soon as I get them. If they're cursed, I (usually) quit. Otherwise, many rings can be identified through experience: regeneration, strength, maintain strength, stealth, searching. [7] Trolls are tough because they regenerate, so ofttimes they're not worth fighting. Indeed, at about Level 18, when Umber Hulks show up, I start running for the Amulet. [8] This may be a dead issue, but THE monster to genocide is Umber Hulks. Dragons don't wander, and theyy usually sleep. Mimics are wimps who often have treasure. Purple worms do about as much damage as Umber Hulks, but Worms don't confuse, and are worth about 4000 Experience. [9] A true story: a friend of mine survived to Level 26. He dropped his scroll of Scare Monster, and waited for wanderers. He got some Purple Worms and Umber Hulks, and was real happy with 4 rations of food and 70+ HP. Then, an Umber Hulk walked up, knelt before the Scare Monster, and was duly executed. HE DROPPED THE AMULET!! My friend hadn't MOVED, let alone picked up the amulet. Do monsters pick up things you've never seen? On the way up, the following messages occurred: You missed the nymph--More-- The nymph hit you--More-- She stole an Amulet of Yendor! Strangely, though, NO PROBLEM. The
