I would not be rigid about commas fore and aft of those abbreviations.
Usually some kind of punctuation is appropriate.  Punctuate them as if
they were spelled out and translated.  I.e.: read 'i.e.' as 'that is',
and 'e.g.' as 'for example'.  The punctuation which fits the phrase in
context will suit the abbreviations.
   The common error I have seen (apart from confusing the two) is to
omit the inner stop, as in
	* eg.
			Julian Davies, Waterloo   (watmath!djmdavies)
