IN THE EVENT OF AN OUTTAGE CHECK http://www.lonestar.org FOR UPDATES Also, please read and on the 'bboard' for news and support --------------------------------------------------------- New Commands (aka DARPA UNIX Services) --------------------------------------------------------- telnet TELNET is a protocol used for making a connection to a remote system from sdf. You are probably using TELNET to connect to sdf at this moment. Please only TELNET to computers that you have authorised use. ssh SSH (Secure Shell) is a client used for making secure (encrypted) connections to a remote system. SSH also incorporates compression which can help if you are trying to reach a host on a slow network. Please only SSH to computers that you are authorised to use. ftp FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL allows you to quickly transfer files between two systems. An improved version of this is called ncftp. scp Secure CoPy. This programme allows you to copy files between computers using 'ssh'. ytalk YTALK is a multi-user chat programme. It features split screen chatting and a command menu. YTALK uses the NTALK protocol. lynx A textual web browser and a little more, lynx can be used as an FTP client as well. (also try 'links') snarf Snarf is a really quick way to grab files from webservers or ftpservers. (also try 'wget' and 'curl') irc Internet Relay Chat pledge Make a pledge of support to the SDF Public Access UNIX System. Also, pledge will tell you the current funding goals. --------------------------------------------------------- Extended ARPA Member Utilities --------------------------------------------------------- mkvhost For ARPA members that want to join the VHOST membership tier. It Allows you to manage your domain and subdomains. mkvpm This utility allows you to manage your Virtual Pop3 Mailboxes. tweak Allows your to fine tune your 300mb quota. mdns Update your MDNS (dynamic DNS) IP address. dues Display your current dues status. (This is helpful if you have other memberships such as VHOST, DBA, VPM .. et cetera). Note that if you have other memberships, you will receive a friendly reminder on the 1st of each month that your dues are due. --------------------------------------------------------- Files and Directories of Importance --------------------------------------------------------- The quota system is used on the fileserver 'ol'. There are three mount areas that have filesystem quotas activated : /arpa, /www and /mail. You can use the 'quota' command to see what diskspace is available to you. ARPA members have a 100mb quota on all three filesystems. Although we say ARPA gets '100mb of storage', its really 300. We don't show it as that, because its really only 100mb on three different filesystems. While you can use whatever space you need (/tmp has no quota) we ask that you be a little responsible for yourself, meaning, don't hog 300mb if there isn't any space left on a certain device.
