Slackware 10.2 is released!
|
| |
The newest release of Slackware, version 10.2, is available now. As always, thanks to all the people who helped make this release possible.
Slackware 10.2 includes the Linux 2.4.31 kernel, with Linux 2.6.13 available in the /testing directory. For the first time, a 2.6 kernel with support for SCSI, RAID, and SATA is offered as a boot option in the installer (called "test26.s"). Slackware 10.2 also sports a new revision of glibc (2.3.5) with NPTL support for improved thread performance when using a kernel with NPTL support, the latest KDE 3.4.2 and XFce 4.2.2 desktop environments, updated development tools, and new additions like SASL support in sendmail, the Subversion version control system, the Firefox browser, and the Thunderbird email and news client. For a complete list of changes since Slackware 10.1, check out the Slackware 10.2
ChangeLog.
Read the official
announcement here.
To order the official release of Slackware or
other Slackware products (and help
support the Slackware project), visit the Slackware store.
ISO images are available through BitTorrent
here.
A list of mirrors that are likely to be among
the first offering the 10.2 release may be found
here.
Thanks again to the unofficial mirror admins and my friends on irc.oftc.net for helping with the BitTorrents!
Have fun! :-)

Test on the package browser
|
| |
I'm currently redirecting people from http://slackware.com/pb/ to http://slackware.it/en/ so that I can make them test some new features (and not stress the main site if something breaks ;-). The PB has been restored and also, I added some more features.
Everyone is invited to give a look over there, and report any kind of problem you may find. The plan is to backport the new package browser here on the .com if everything goes well, and maybe some of the other new features from slackware.it too (depending on how well they scale.) |

Slackware Linux Essentials 2nd Edition
|
| |
Recently the Slackware Linux Essentials (the reference book for Slackware users) has been revised; while we announce it, we would like to
thank everyone who took part in it, and congratulate them for the well done job! The homepage for this project (which is now an official Slackware project) is
www.slackbook.org, so visit that site if you want to read more (and read the book online). Also, don't forget to visit the
slackware store, where the printed copies of the new book are now on sale! |

New port and other changes!
|
| |
Recently some changes happened here on
slackware.com - you may have noticed them
already, but since they were silent changes, we
thought we'd better post an announcement :)
First of all, there's a new official Slackware
Port, it's Slack/390 (for the s/390
architecture obviously). Mark Post and Mike
Kershaw began porting Slackware to the mainframe
early in 2001; Mark is currently the sole
developer/maintainer of the Slack/390
project.
Further information about the S/390 port can be
found on the slack390 official website, but you can also keep an eye on its
developement using our changelog page.
Second, the mirrors list (getslack) has been updated. Dead
mirrors have been removed, and a number of new
ones have been added. Emails sent to the mirrors
admin get (and will get) a reply in a "short"
time now ;-)
The mirrors list isn't the only thing updated on the site: the install and the config sections have been recently updated and they now provide help for the latest stable release of Slackware.
Also, a new version of the Slackware Package Browser (pb)
has been released and has been integrated!
It features filename, package and description
searches as well as direct browsing of various
slackware version trees (8.1 and higher, current
included). Also, the pb is now integrated with
the mirrors list. So give a look at it if
you haven't already.
Updates on the site and the new Package Browser
are by Andreas Liebschner (me). I'm also the
person behind mirrors updates.
We hope that everyone will enjoy these changes! |

Slackware ten-year anniversary!
|
| |
Ten years ago, while a student at Moorhead State
University, I posted this
announcement on comp.os.linux, and the
Slackware Linux distribution was born. It's hard to
believe it's been a decade already! My deep
appreciation goes out to Linus and all the Linux
developers, RMS and GNU, and the many other
people who have contributed to the Slackware
project over the years who have made it all possible.
It's been amazing (and fun) to watch how all of this
has evolved.
So, here's to all of you, and thanks for a great ten
years! (hey, maybe that's a good excuse to inflate
the version number again! No, just kidding. :-) |
