How can a paper-oriented journal make 18 sense in this hypermedia [1] era? 19 20 Rather than a continuous feed of upmost shocking 21 headlines, The Gopher Times publishes news you can 22 read without a cookiewall or paywall. 23 24 Paper newspapers go through a long chain: reporters, 25 photographers, redactors, editors, columnists, layout 26 artists, typesetters, printers, carriers and other 27 supportive technicians... and are sold for a quarter. 28 29 The web considerably shackled the landscape: the high 30 speed of computers made real-time text news a reality, 31 where time from Trump's tweet announcements to 32 publication is below a few hours. 33 34 This journal diverts the present norm by 90° by using 35 troff(1) as its foundation: a typesetter producing 36 static documents ready to be printed. 37 38 A new markdown to troff converter [2] as well as an 39 entire custom macro set mw [3] are built to fit 40 screens of all shapes, and build-up the sensibility of 41 an actual journal. 42 ____________________ 43 [1] 44 term used by Roy Fielding (Apache httpd) 45 [2] 46 git://git.z0.is/notmarkdown 47 [3] 48 git://bitreich.org/tgtimes 49 50 51 52 This month in Nixers Book Club nixers 53 ____________________________________________________________ 54 55 There are a lot of books in a library, and it is the 56 role of teachers to build up a sequence of books to 57 learn a topic. And I found the same story, now on the world 240 wide web. 241 242 I've taken the time to translate the story from 243 Russian to English such that everyone can enjoy the 244 gifts of Russian usenet koans. 245 246 Enjoy responsibly. 256 257 The bear was a filthy, clumsy, and dirty animal. 258 However, no one was as loving as he was in the whole 259 forest. But the animals only saw his exterior, to 260 which the bear became upset, caught them, and brutaly 261 beat them with his legs. Even though he was very 262 loving. And happy. He loved practical jokes. For these 263 jokes the animals started to hate the bear and beat 264 him. Yes, it;s hard to be loving and happy. 271 272 The wolf was also filthy and dirty. He was also very 273 evil and cruel. But the animals din't hate him and 274 didn't beat him. Because the wolf died early in his 275 childhood. Because the bear was born before the wolf. 276 Yes, it's good when good triumphs over evil. 282 283 The rabbit was also evil and cruel. And dirty. He was 284 also a coward. The rabbit never commited any evil as 285 he was scared. But he was still beaten. Because evil 286 must be punished. 299 300 The woodpecker was also evil and cruel. He didn't beat 301 animals, as he didn't have any arms. So he took his 302 anger out on trees. He was not beaten, as no one could 303 reach him. One day a tree crushed him to death. The 304 animals said it took revenge. After that, then animals 305 were afraid of pissing on trees for a month. Instead 306 they pissed on the rabbit. The rabbit got a cold and 307 died. Everyone knew that the woodpecker was at fault. 308 But he wasn't beaten, as no one could get him out from 309 the fallen tree. Yes, sometimes evil remains 310 unpunished. 326 327 The mole was small and blind. He was not evil. He just 328 did his job really well. It was he who dug under the 329 tree which fell on the woodpecker. No one knew about 330 his digging and he was not beaten. He was rarely 331 beaten. More often scared. But it was really hard to 332 scare him as he was blind, and didn't see that he was 333 being scared. When the animals were unable to scare 334 the mole they became very upset. And beat the bear. 335 One day the bear decided to sacre the mole. But he 336 didn't scare the mole. Because he killed him. 337 Accidentally. As he was very clumsy. And the animals 338 brutally beat him for killing the mole, even though 339 the bear said it was a prank. It's unfortunate when no 340 one understands your pranks. 349 350 The fox was very cunning. She could easily outsmart 351 anyone. When she could outsmart someone, she was not 352 beaten. But when she coudln't, she was beaten. Hard. 353 And at that point she couldn't outsmart anyone, as 354 it's hard to outsmart someone when you're being 355 beaten. One day she was beaten to death. Yes, truth 356 will always come to light. 365 366 The boar was big, strong, and scary. Everyone was 367 scared of him. That is why he was always beaten with 368 the whole forest. Or simply stoned him. The boar 369 didn't like that. One day he hid all of the stones in 370 the forest. For the he was beaten really hard. After 371 that, the boar never hid stones. And so they say, 372 there is time to collect stones, and time to not touch 373 them. 382 383 The goat was neither good nor evil. He was a goat. He 384 often goated. And the animals were scared of beating 385 him. With his goatness he got on everyones nerves. And 386 he was beaten to death, because otherwise he would 387 have died of old age. Someday. After the goat died, 388 the bear cried, because he secretly loved the goat. 389 Yes, love is a cruel mistress. 396 397 The hedgehog was small and prickly. He wasn't evil, he 398 was prickly by his own nature. For that he was beaten 399 exclusively in the stomach. And so the hedgehog 400 started shaving bald. And he was beaten like everyone 401 else. Yes, it's hard to be not like everyone else. 415 416 The skunk was very much like rabbit. But very smelly. 417 He was beaten only inside a plastic bag, because then 418 the smell wasn't as bad. One day the skunk had a 419 birthday party, and he invited all of the animals as 420 he was greedy and he loved presents. The animals got 421 him a new plastig bag. And then proceeded to beat him 422 until loss of consciousness. The skunk then suffocated 423 inside the bag. That is how he was buried. In the 424 plastic bag. In the very far away forest, as a dead 425 skunk smelt worse than a living skunk. Then the 426 animals from the very far away forest came and beat 427 everyone hard. They didn't like the smell of the dead 428 skunk. Yes, you must love your neighbour. 435 436 The hasmter was also very greedy. And rich. If he 437 shared his riches he woudn't be beaten as hard. But he 438 was greedy. And he was beaten hard. And he still had 439 to share his riches. For that he cried. Yes, even rich 440 people cry. 446 447 The lion was king. He ruled the forest. You're not 448 supposed to beat kings. Such is the law. But the 449 animals gave a fuck about the law. They beat the lion. 450 Why? That's just how things go in forest. 453 454 Moral: Sunrises here are quiet... 455 456 457 458 Publishing in The Gopher Times you 459 ____________________________________________________________ 460 461 Want your article published?
