My day started just kinda messed up. I made the mistake of working
on the home network. Last night, I stayed up until 3AM working on
the network and continued this morning. More of planning and head
churning, rather than implementation. I tend to do that cart before
or sometimes on top of horse.
Sometime last week, I woke up with my family informing me that the
home intarwebs stopped working. I restarted the Customer Provided
Equipment (my router, not the telco's) and long story short, my
router's config was wiped. I quickly threw a config together to get
us up and running, especially since my wife works remotely. The
network was not configured to my liking and planned on working on it
over the weekend.
Fast-forward to Sunday, I am working on the network configuration as
well as updating the router firmware. I am also redesigning my
network since I decide that it is an opportune time to do so and I
also neglected to make backups of my previous config. I also decide
that it was a perfect time to check for any network hardware that
needs to be updated.
Around midnight, I am looking to check one of my managed switches.
The default IP address does not work for the device and the last
time I accessed the device was probably quite some time ago, which
was probably when I manually renumbered the IP address. So my next
option was access via the 9 pin console port.
I go hunting around for my Cisco console kit, find it, then realize
that I only have one RJ-45 to DE9 serial adapter and need two. I
go digging around my boxes of junk and find 3 RJ-45 to DB25
adapters. I also found a 25 pin to 9 pin adapter, but no RJ-45 to
DE9. So I try assembing all the parts together to make it work, but
it did not. The connection from my laptop to the switch basically
looked like this:

So a little before 3AM, I decided to just quit it and order a new
DE9 to RJ-45. These things are less than 4 dollars. It's funny how
fixated on things I can become especially after midnight when I am
tired and need to rest. Sometimes at that point it is hard for me
to just let go of the damn thing and get some sleep.
This morning I tested the network and made sure my wife could work.
I started to get into the config some more, but had the presence of
mind to force myself to put it down. The network configuration is
not complete, but it is functional and partially to my liking. There
is still much work to be done did. Before I proceed, I need to put
my plan on paper so I do not get side-tracked and hijacked by my
monkey mind. I also need to keep the cart behind the horse and not
build the plane while it is in the air. Document the plan first and
then implement. No need for unnecessary hate from the fam due to
unplanned network outages.
