I went to Perfect Circuit[0] in Burbank for the first time today. It
was recommended to me by dj buttstuf (miss you, man!) some time ago
but it hasn't been until now that I have visted since pandemic and
everything that's been going on. I have also been holding off on
visiting since at the time, I did not have much time or resources
to allocate to music. I am in a different place now and decided to
pay them a visit.
They have a nice showroom in Burbank. Very clean and lots of nice,
shiny equipment. There were a few customers there checking out the
hardware. A majority of the stuff is foreign to me and way over my
head (and budget.) I looked around for a little while but didn't
stay that long and basically just went in there for what I needed.
I don't need to be distracted by other things right now.
I've been reading and watching videos about synthesizers quite a bit
lately, especially since aNONradio has been doing Synth Battle Royale
(SBR) on Friday nights (my time.) [1] SBR, which was started by
chairman tob and MC'd by smj, has been really interesting and
inspirational. I'm learning a lot just listening to other SDFsynth
players at all different levels and equipment creating music on the fly
like that. Just listening to them set up in round 1 and play more in
round 2 has really piqued my interest in synthesizers again. Also,
chairman tob and the dubious goals committee talk quite a bit about
simf during the daily shows @ 1930 UTC on aNONradio. [2]
Growing up, I took piano lessons and learned the basics, but put it
down a couple years later when I started learning how to play the
guitar. I would futz around with the piano every now and then, but my
main instrument has been the guitar.
Throughout the years, I would pick up and put down the piano and the
guitar every few years, mostly to just try remembering what I used to
play and not really learning anything new. It was like that for some
time, especially when I started raising my family.
When my kids were old enough, I had them take piano lessons and my
parents even had the piano I grew up with (Kimball console piano)
shipped over to our house on the other side of the country. During
this time, I also started picking up the guitar and piano again,
but this time I've been learning new things and continuing with
fairly regular practice.
Since my kids have gotten older, I've had more time to allocate to
continuing my musical journey. I have been expanding my experience
of music and suprisingly, even created my own music and instruments.
This has been outside of anything I thought possible with myself
since I never really saw myself doing much with music. Maybe some
day I'll even learn how to read music and learn some theory.
If any of you reading this used to play an instrument but have put
it down, I encourage you to pick it back up and learn something
new...or even try a new instrument! The journey does not have to
end where you put it down.
