+++ Monday 14 July 2025 +++ Installed the WPA2 update on Palm TX ==================================== Today I installed the WPA2 update on my Palm TX. This is scary, because it wipes the device. Palm TX WPA2 Enterprise Security Upgrade ---------------------------------------- When I was working at the university, I had installed this upgrade, to be able to connect to the university wifi network. This was very needed because the digital calender was rather dynamic, sceduled appointments could appear and disappear, move to a different time, a different room or even to a different building. Last year, when I wrote the ROOPLOCH 2024 phlog post [1], I discovered that the Palm still held university content. After writing the post I did a factory reset, loosing the WPA2 upgrade in the process. Backup ------ Because the upgrade wipes the device, first thing is to perform a backup. Last year I installed the Palm Desktop on the Power Mac G4. Now the G4 is up and working again for the Old Computer Challenge, I could backup the device. SD-card ------- The documentation states that it requires a SD-card. It turned out that the Palm TX doesn't support 4G SD-cards. The Card-application just reports that there is no card inserted. After I had discovered a 1G SD-card the bottom of a drawer, the Card-application notifies it sees a card. After reformating and copying the WPA2-upgrade directories to it and inserting it in the Palm, the devices recognized the launcher and the upgrade could be started. The Palm performs a kind of factory reset, you have to recalibrate the touch screen, and set the date and time again. Backup restore -------------- Using the Palm Desktop the backup was restored. This is also a bit scary, the cable connection is not 100%, sometimes it reports errors. The second try every thing worked fine and I got all my settings and content back :) Connecting to Wifi ------------------ When scanning, it discovers our home wifi router. Strangly, when selecting a connection method, you have to select "WPA-PSK". The encryption can be kept at Auto (TKIP-AES). The first connection attempt failed. After leaving the attic and moving closer to the router, it connected and I was able to open http://occ.deadnet.se in the browser. Using the Overbite app I could open some Gopher pages. Slow! ----- Opening web pages is slow. I had not expected that even opening Gopher pages would be slow too. Anyway. it is nice to be able to connect to the network again.
