By: Jem Date: January 16, 2020, 11:28 am --------------------------------------------------------- Bottom Line: Fantastic news! I will be donating my kidney in less than three weeks and my friend will be able to avoid dialysis and has a great chance of a healthy life! Brief Background: A friend of mine started experiencing kidney failure as a child, and her mother donated a kidney to her 25 years ago, when my friend was 17. My friend and her husband could not have biological kids and were foster parents for several years. They have now stopped being foster parents because they have actually adopted SEVEN kids out of the foster care system (a set of four biological siblings, a set of two biological siblings, and another daughter)!!!!! Their hearts are huge and their family of nine is amazing. In July my friend learned that her kidney was again failing, and she would need a transplant. My immediate thought was, “I hope someone steps up,” followed quickly by a strong sense of confidence that I was the person who should offer my kidney to her. I started the donation process in mid-July 2019. The process was far more time consuming and intensive than anticipated, but I was ultimately approved to be a kidney donor in November 2019. However, while I am a universal donor due to my blood type (O-) my friend had built up antibodies from her first transplant that would cause her to reject my kidney. We were placed on the National Kidney Registry for a paired donation (I would donate to a recipient compatible with me in exchange for that recipient’s donor being compatible with and donating to my friend) in early December 2019. My friend’s health continued to decline and she was fitted with stents to begin dialysis this past Monday. Dialysis would mean she would be unable to care for herself or her seven children (ranging in age from 1-13 years old). She would also be unable to work. The strain on her and her husband and kids would be immense. Yesterday (Wednesday) we got news that a paired match was found for us!!! My friend will get her transplant and avoid dialysis! All four of us are scheduled for surgery on February 4, 2020. I am overwhelmed with gratitude that a paired match was found and my friend and her family will be able to avoid dialysis and live a productive and healthy life post-transplant! I am both excited and nervous for surgery, but I have absolutely no doubts about going forward. #Post#: 45665-------------------------------------------------- Re: Kidney Transplant News!
