There is a lady at work who just donated her kidney to her
husband...she was talking about coming back after 3 weeks and we
told her to take the full 6 weeks she is allowed.

That's great she was able to donate to him! How are they doing?
Regarding recovery, everyone is different. I think one reason I
felt so called to donate my kidney is because I was confident I
would recover well given my health and fitness. I felt that the
minimal discomfort I would feel was so small if I could
       literally help save someone's life.
I went back to work two weeks after my surgery, and honestly I
could have been back to after only one week. I was glad to have
the time to recover, but I spent it walking, spending time with
my family, and working on my novel. Of course I had some pain (I
still do, 3.5 weeks later), but I am mostly back to being myself
aside from physical restrictions (I do Olympic weightlifting and
CrossFit and won't be cleared to do either for some time yet).
If I had taken more time off work it would have been more like
vacation than recovery, and would have caused me more stress
than it would be worth. I didn't file for short term disability
(because I have significant PTO - just used 10 days) so I wanted
to get back to my regular life as soon as practical.
I had my surgery 2/4/20, I was discharged 2/6/20, and I was able
to walk (slowly, and with full approval of my medical team) 4.5
       miles on 2/7/20. On 2/8/20 I walked 9 miles, and on 2/9/20 I
walked 10 miles. This activity helped me IMMENSELY because it
allowed my body to better eliminate the gas in my abdomen from
the surgery and the fluid I retained. By 2/13/20 I was able
(again, with the full approval of my medical team) to
incorporate elliptical, bike, and lunges and air squats. Aside
from my scars, I look about the same as I did pre-surgery
(although my muscles feel like they are atrophying, and my jeans
are loose because of it - hah!)
I am feeling great, still with some abdominal and incisional
pain, but I am back to being me! More importantly, my recipient
is doing GREAT!!!!! She has her life back, and for that I am so
       thankful.
My intended recipient (my friend) still does not have her kidney
because we were part of a paired donation through the National
Kidney Registry (because my friend and I were a blood match but
not a tissue match) and her donor decided not to donate for
whatever reason (we don't know why this other donor opted not to
donate - this was devastating news but I went forward with my
donation because it helps the person who got my kidney and
placed my friend at the top of the living donor list). My friend
is a difficult person to match and she is #1 on the National
Kidney Registry due to my donation so hopefully they find a
       suitable kidney for her soon.

OP here with some good news among the craziness that is 2020....
I thought I would update that my intended recipient finally got
her kidney (completing the chain started when I donated on
2/4/20) on 6/2/20 and is doing GREAT!!!!! She has been released
from Mayo to the transplant house for further recovery before
she can go home. The woman who got my kidney is also doing GREAT
and she was at Mayo for a four month check up today and those
two were able to meet in person!!! HOW COOL! I am so happy that
they are both doing well and that they have met and are becoming
       friends.
