(The Steel Inserts are supplied by McGill Motorsports, who I use lots). The Inserts appear to have a light plating on the surface that can cause a problem as I have just found out ! The coating appears to turn to a fine, powder like substance after welding and sits in the female threads. If you dont flush out the threads before fitting the Rod End, the 2 parts GALL up badly. Simple solution when you know....flush out the threads after welding #Post#: 12129-------------------------------------------------- Re: Welded Inserts for Track Rods and Drag Links, etc. By: Phaeton Date: December 14, 2024, 10:49 am --------------------------------------------------------- Suspect a change of supplier, I've had stuff from McGill's over a long period of time & never had an issue, might be worth dropping them an email in case they aren't aware. #Post#: 12130-------------------------------------------------- Re: Welded Inserts for Track Rods and Drag Links, etc. By: StefanN Date: December 14, 2024, 1:46 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Do you think it might be Zinc from the plating? Nasty fumes if it is. #Post#: 12142-------------------------------------------------- Re: Welded Inserts for Track Rods and Drag Links, etc. By: jon.pearce Date: December 16, 2024, 11:36 am --------------------------------------------------------- Just for information.... The McGill part description says: Weldable carbon steel insert, with a protective BZP coating, that burns off easily when welded ! #Post#: 12143-------------------------------------------------- Re: Welded Inserts for Track Rods and Drag Links, etc. By: jim Date: December 17, 2024, 12:40 am --------------------------------------------------------- BZP or Zintec coatings do burn off and give a white powder residue when MIG welded. Tig welding doesn't like the coatings so much, it spits and contaminates the tungsten. You can end up spending more time grinding your tip than welding. (not a euphemism) Some years ago, I turned a load of mild steel inserts on an old capstan lathe to accept M10 threads, 20mm o/d and 15 I/d. They are tapered towards the end and chamfered on the shoulder to get better weld penetration. #Post#: 12475-------------------------------------------------- Re: Welded Inserts for Track Rods and Drag Links, etc. By: tim.wheater Date: January 23, 2025, 2:36 pm --------------------------------------------------------- I use link nuts as inserts, cheap as chips from toolstation *****************************************************
