Below are some questions I thought might be interesting, but if you have something else that you took away from this chapter, please share. 1. In what ways do find opportunities to learn new things? 2. Do you think it was a waste to go to college when you later begin your vocation as a "stay at home" mom? 3. How do you find ways to teach your children the importance of learning? Or how would you see yourself teaching your future children? 4. In what ways do you grow in your faith? Do you teach your children about your faith? Enjoy your read and I look forward to reading all your post! Again, if you don't connect with the above questions, please feel free to write what you did take away from the chapter because that is what really matters:) #Post#: 74-------------------------------------------------- Re: Chapter 7 - School's Never Out - The Joy of Becoming a Lifel ong Learner By: MommaAshley Date: June 26, 2018, 2:32 pm --------------------------------------------------------- 1. In what ways do find opportunities to learn new things? Oh goodness, I love to learn. I would be a forever student if I had the money to do so. I think I find that I learn new things when it saves me money. For instance, with my newborn photography, there are so many wraps and backdrops and headbands. They can get very pricey and everything you need to make them is available at the local craft stores. I watch tutorial videos and then get to work, if it's something I'm not sure how to make. I find myself to be pretty crafty, so it helps. I also have loved attending college as an adult. I appreciate the time and financial investment. I do however procrastinate on papers, it's the only way I can complete them. I think because I get everything in there, read, review, and complete in a shorter period of time. Like a race with myself, might not be the best approach. 2. Do you think it was a waste to go to college when you later begin your vocation as a "stay at home" mom? I definitely do not think college is a waste. A lot of nights, attending class, was a break from the stay at home mom life. I was able to learn, grow as "Ashley," and interact with other adults. I really enjoyed myself. 3. How do you find ways to teach your children the importance of learning? Or how would you see yourself teaching your future children? We have 3 children in school and it's hard, mainly because education is so different these days. Our kids go to top schools and for the most part they are all excelling as to be expected. We try to focus on the "putting in the work" and "trying your best." Focusing on numbers (grades) seems to be more pressure than they can take sometimes. I don't want them to associate a number with their work. We also try to encourage our children to try new things and keep commitments made when it comes to school clubs or activities. 4. In what ways do you grow in your faith? Do you teach your children about your faith? I think as a mom, I grow everyday. Sometimes I feel like I take a few steps back, especially on the days where I've yelled or just been so tired. My children are continuing to teach me patience and unconditional love. #Post#: 75-------------------------------------------------- Re: Chapter 7 - School's Never Out - The Joy of Becoming a Lifel ong Learner By: Birdie Date: June 29, 2018, 5:22 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Good Afternoon my Book Club buddies, Well I’ve been super busy so I can’t say that I actually did all the youtube reviews for Monday’s chapter. But I did read it and thought it was really interesting. I love learning! Well now, not so much when I was in high school. I thought school was a waste of time and I wouldn’t need any of that stupid stuff in life! Boy was I wrong. Times were different back then though so you could easily get a job without going to college. When I decided to go back to school for nursing I ended up loving to learn and still enjoy it today. I would love to take more classes just for the heck of it, maybe one day I will. For now, I find opportunities for learning through the internet, reading, and youtube videos (yes, some can be very educational). When I find something I am really into I tend to dive in and find as much information as possible to find out about it. I never think it’s a waste of time to go to college. Even if you are or end up after college being a stay at home mom, you have a big responsibility in teaching your kids as much as you can. In addition, depending on what you went to school for it might come in handy. And, you never know what life will throw you and you might end up going back to work. So it’s always as good back up! And I think school makes you well rounded. I did listen to one youtuber, Laura Likes and it surprised me that she went to law school. I never would have figured – caught me, I judged someone by their youtube video! Bad, Bad ☹ But, she said how having that knowledge gives her the ability to read any type of contract or document that might come up which has been good for her. I think it’s important to teach your kids about learning whether it’s through reading to them, watching educational shows or just sharing your knowledge with them. And encouraging them to always do their best and absorb as much information as possible. Unfortunately, you have to be careful these days in finding safe ways for kids to learn outside of school. Geez even school sometimes can be so “one sided!” It drives me crazy when I hear how they want to practically erase entire chapters in our Country’s history because it might offend someone. That is how we learn and grow as a people. It’s not about erasing, but about learning what we might have done wrong and strive to always to better. I also think it’s important to let your kids know that you should never stop learning. When you think you know it all = scary!! So when they see their Mom or Dad learning something new, going back to school or just reading about an interesting topic or a good book it can encourage the same in them. I think I grow in my faith as a Catholic by going to mass every Sunday and reading books about the Catholic faith. I have a lot of Catholic youtubers that I watch also. I think I mentioned Father Mike on Ascension Press – he is awesome and his youtube videos are short but very educational and encouraging. And he’s pretty funny as well! Another person I follow is Bishop Barron – he is wonderful. I have watched most of his videos and read a couple of his books. If you are ever interested in learning about the Catholic faith and it’s history he is a wonderful resource. He is down to earth and straight forward in his teaching. In addition to his youtube videos and books he has a website called “word on fire” (I don’t really like that name because it scares me! Reminds me of the Baptist scare tactics growing up!!) that has a lot of great videos on the history of the catholic church. Okay so I have been rambling a lot, sorry! I hope you all enjoy this chapter and I look forward to reading the next one. Hopefully I will have some time to read ahead while driving next week 😊 #Post#: 76-------------------------------------------------- Re: Chapter 7 - School's Never Out - The Joy of Becoming a Lifel ong Learner By: Birdie Date: June 29, 2018, 5:31 pm --------------------------------------------------------- [quote author=MommaAshley link=topic=8.msg74#msg74 date=1530041576] 1. I think your kids are learning the importance of education by watching their mom go back to school to get your degree as an adult. I also think Will does a good job at teaching the kids the importance of learning through reading that I know is one of his favorite loves! #Post#: 77-------------------------------------------------- Re: Chapter 7 - School's Never Out - The Joy of Becoming a Lifel ong Learner By: Jday1106 Date: June 30, 2018, 8:49 am --------------------------------------------------------- 1. In what ways do find opportunities to learn new things? There are numerous ways I find opportunities to learn new things. As far as work, I learn new things constantly. I am huge on asking questions whenever I don't know something. I never assume I know something, if I'm unsure I ask or I look it up. Right now I work in PACU which consists of recovering patients after surgery and I'm in the process of reading a booklet my manager gave me that is full of information in this field. As far as my daily life outside of work I have numerous hobbies such as gardening (plants and flowers, not veggies), arts and crafts projects, my faith, cooking, and numerous other little things that pop up. Anytime I want to learn more about a topic I look toward books, the internet, YouTube, or people that I feel are knowledgably in the particular topic. Learning is a never ending thing. I will say that I hate going to school lol. I enjoy the learning part but I hate the assignment and test part, it always causes too much stress and I hate having deadlines to stick to. I definitely don't see myself constantly pursuing higher and higher degrees. At the moment I have my associates in nursing and I am sure one day will go back to receive my bachelors but honestly at this time have no interest in pursuing it. 2. Do you think it was a waste to go to college when you later begin your vocation as a "stay at home" mom? So it took me years to finally finish college and just get an associates lol, I kept changing my major and nursing school takes forever to get into. I obviously am not a stay at home mom but I would absolutely love to be one, I would actually love to just be a house wife right now lol. I can say that definitely NO I would not feel like it was a waste to go to college. If I quit working tomorrow to just stay home, I worked my butt off to finish school but I wouldn't feel like it was all worth nothing just because I wasn't using my degree to work. The securement of knowing I have a college degree and can get a job whenever I want is very important to me. You never know what the future holds and although Andrew has an amazing job right now, there may come a time (hopefully never) when he may be unable to work and knowing that I can work instead makes me feel secure. Also I love all the information I learned while in school, even if I don't use my degree to work, I still will always have the education that I received, and that education has made me a more informed human being which I think is very important. It blows my mind how some people are so ignorant in this world and some of the decisions they make are crazy to me, but then I have to also understand that not everyone was blessed enough to receive a good education. So for this reason also, college or just any formal education, to me is never a waste, education is not purely just for attaining a job, it's there to make us better informed people. 3. How do you find ways to teach your children the importance of learning? Or how would you see yourself teaching your future children? When I envision teaching my one day children about learning I see it being an everyday thing. I can see me starting when they are babies and buying toys that are fun to play with but also educational. Teaching them about colors and learning new words. Teaching them to count while I feed them. Maybe teaching them sign language as babies (hmm am I going to be one of those moms, I don't know). I definitely plan on teaching them to be a good loser and winner when it comes to playing games or playing sports. Teaching them how to behave properly is something I think is important. I definitely don't plan on just assuming someone else is going to do a good job teaching my kids. I think it is the parents who are the primary teaching figures in children's lives, it is ultimately the parent's responsibility to teach their kids. That's really all I have to say about that (Forest Gump). 4. In what ways do you grow in your faith? Do you teach your children about your faith? I try to grow in my faith everyday. Some days I do better then others, some months I do better then others. I go in and out of periods where I'm super interested in learning new things and then periods when I'm content with what I already know. I think we should always strive to grow everyday in our faith though, there is always stuff to learn or perfect. I personally just love my faith and find joy in learning about it, I'm just so curious about things and love diving deeper and deeper into things and just informing myself better on customs and traditions that come with my faith. I grow in my faith mostly through informative books, but have just recently branched out in using toutube which I never even thought contained so many informative videos but actually does. I try on my days off each morning to watch a new youtube video to grow in my faith, usually just something quick, videos usally last somewhere between 8-20 minutes. Something I'll do a couple short videos, just depending on my mood, sometimes I'll spend an hour watching videos. I also grow in my faith through weekly mass, I love listening to the homilies every week and trying to understand how to incorporate what is said in my daily life, sometimes it takes a bunch of pray to understand how something may fit into my life. If I have children one day, I plan on teaching them about the faith immediately. Little things when they are young such a short childrens books, toys, stuffed animals that say prayers, childrens shows that are faith based. When they are school aged, I plan on having them go to Sunday school and sending them to Catholic school verus public school. I plan on having set family time together to do certain things, praying together at meals, taking time to do a pray before bed, going to church every Sunday together, participating as a family during traditional times such as lent and advent season, and other little things here and there. #Post#: 79-------------------------------------------------- Re: Chapter 7 - School's Never Out - The Joy of Becoming a Lifel ong Learner By: mnlepage328 Date: June 30, 2018, 11:28 pm --------------------------------------------------------- 1. In what ways do find opportunities to learn new things? I find opportunities to learn every day. In the Navy I have taken the time to go to as many schools as they will let me because I just love learning. Education has always been very important to me, as you all know. I feel that as I get older, I need to continue to learn new things, whether it be something job related, educating myself on all the things I'm consuming or products I use on my body, learning something new about cars, or finding the actual facts when it comes down to what's going on in our world. Today I learned how to use my new Instant Pot, that I have been researching and considering buying for a couple of months, and what an awesome new tool! Just silly stuff like that is always fun to learn! 2. Do you think it was a waste to go to college when you later begin your vocation as a "stay at home" mom? Like everyone else said, I definitely don't think going to college is a waste! It's an important way to always have security since you never know what will happen in life. And I think it is always better to further your own education, whether you use it or not. I think having a college degree will also encourage my children to try to get a degree. College is also nice, because unlike high school, you get more of a say in the classes you get to take! That's always been nice to me, and I always try to encourage Matt to go to college for this reason. I think he would love majoring in history, although there's not much he could do with that! Also, every college class I've been in has opened me up to the ideas of people from all walks of life. It's always interesting to have a debate with other's on whatever topic you are learning. 3. How do you find ways to teach your children the importance of learning? Or how would you see yourself teaching your future children? Oh I can't wait to teach my kiddos! That's literally one of the parts of my vocation to be a mother I am most excited about. I love watching kids learn and grow and discover all the things there are to discover. I plan on making learning fun for my kids. Doing little challenges for who can read the most books or something like that. And I am also looking forward to teaching them how to ride bikes and play the sports that I love. I know I'm gonna be a baseball/softball momma! I plan on trying to minimize electronics and encourage my kids to play outside and teach them about nature. Life's about balancing things like that, and I think that is one very important thing that children are laking now adays. Electronics are fine and dandy but they can't consume your life...sometimes you gotta get outside and take a hike! 4. In what ways do you grow in your faith? Do you teach your children about your faith? I've discussed it with Matt and even though we aren't super huge into church, we have decided we will teach our kids about it. But I do not plan on forcing religion on my kids. I'm not sure if that makes sense. I want to give them the chance to believe but also let them chose. I think that our parents were really good at exposing us to church and allowing us to learn about it, but we were also able to form our own opinions. And I also think that I will teach them about the faith by leading by example. While I sometimes struggle to actually believe there is a God, I do believe in most of the teachings of the church. And I want to raise my kids on those values. *****************************************************
