By: humboldt Date: August 20, 2023, 7:49 pm --------------------------------------------------------- MT is actually over 18 years old and was created on 25th February 2005 as a Yahoo Group with over 600 members out of which about 50 were active posting wise. When Yahoo dropped supporting groups I created this version which I think is much better laid out with forums for each major artist. Now sadly only a handful of faithful members are supporting the group. Most posts get no response and less than 10 views! I honestly don't know how long I can keep MT going as most times I'm just talking to thin air. It's so disheartening that I sometimes feel like closing it down. I know that there has been nothing new for at least the past couple of years. In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, I think that Blinky's double CD in Nov 2009 was the last US release. She made it out of the vaults just as the doors slammed shut behind her! ACE are supposed to working an a male collection and Andy Skurow has not replied to my last three emails! I spend a couple of hours each day scouring the likes of YT, press etc for news but it seems that no one is interested. Perhaps it is time to call it a day? Perhaps Motown is dead? Perhaps I should just shut up? #Post#: 10792-------------------------------------------------- Re: Is Motown Dead? By: ross61 Date: August 21, 2023, 5:37 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Don't know what to say really i'm on your side not much happening with motown i always check your site for any new news most days and always read the new posts. i wish more was happening with strong vinyl sales i was hoping to see more on the motown label, the 7" box sets are fetching some good money there must be a market for new stuff. i wish you well in what ever you do. #Post#: 10793-------------------------------------------------- Re: Is Motown Dead? By: Roger Date: August 22, 2023, 3:03 am --------------------------------------------------------- Interesting that the 7" box sets get mentioned by ross61. There still seems to be a trickle of "new" material issued on 7" vinyl and aimed at the "Collectors"/"Northern Soul" market. The most recent of which was a Barbara McNair 45 on Outta Sight Soul Essentials that paired "It Happens Every Time" with a reissue of her "You're Gonna Love My Baby" (the first time the latter has been legally available on a single since 1966). HTML https://www.northernsouldirect.co.uk/shop/new-releases/barbara-mcnair-it-happens-every-time-youre-gonna-love-my-baby-45-outta-sight-7-vinyl/ Personally I don't buy such things, partly as I have both sides on CD and partly because at £14 the price looks outrageous (a 15 or 20 track CD is usually less than that price), are there any members of MT who do? This was released a few weeks back but nobody saw fit to mention it here until now so I suspect that the answer to my question is no!! By: Bill Date: September 10, 2023, 1:54 pm --------------------------------------------------------- John, I really don't know how to address your matter. I am in the same boat as Roger is. I prefer as many members do the ease and comfort of a CD vs. vinyl. I personally started out many years ago collecting vinyl of which I have way more than I need. With the advent of CDs, I started collecting these and rarely buy any vinyl unless it is something that is missing from my earlier collection. Unfortunately the ones I need are not reasonably priced. Part of the problem with the vinyl I have acquired is that I have all of the Complete Motown Singles which is essentially duplicate effort from the vinyl in my collection. I as probably many others are am not an overwhelming Barbara McNair fan. She is in an entirely different category than the superstars of Motown, i. e. Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops, Miracles, Isley Brothers, etc. I have exactly 4 Barbara McNair singles in my collection but they haven't been played in many years, if ever. I never recall hearing any of her songs on the broadcast airwaves. I am not opposed to her, but she is not someone I would put a priority upon to listen to. In fact if I would hear any of her singles, I probably would not be able to say who sang the song. You have done an extraordinary job with the forum that you created. Yours in my opinion is way superior to the Soulful Detroit forum. The way it is laid out and the ease of using is awesome. As discussed earlier in responses to your initial posting, a lot of the blame lies with Universal. There was a time when Harry came out and made big announcements about upcoming releases, etc. but those were the days. I never hear anything about him and it seems as though he has vanished into thin air. There is quite a legacy behind him and it is a doggone shame in my opinion. I am hoping that whenever the new Motown Museum is officially rededicated in its entirety things might take a turn for the better. I am guilty as others for not utilizing the MT more than I do. I will attempt to do better. But don't drop the forum, it serves a worthwhile purpose. You are appreciated very much. Your care and attention to the forum is what makes it great. #Post#: 10906-------------------------------------------------- Re: Is Motown Dead? By: Paul Nixon Date: September 11, 2023, 11:47 am --------------------------------------------------------- I am lead to believe in a sorry state which exisits in which it is cheaper for Universal not to release back catalogue. It seems that even licensing out material costs more in the way of salaries and mechanicals than they recoup in fees. The same with releasing product themselves - the actual costs of getting physical CD's to market oustrips any commercial gain they could make in way of sales. It seems the only real income comes from licensing from the movie or commercial indusrty. I wondered then why not give the catalogue away but there is always the added advantage of a death of an artist to boost sales or as I say the income from a movie. I think we have had our day in more ways than one. #Post#: 10907-------------------------------------------------- Re: Is Motown Dead? I'm just so relieved that Blinky got out of the vaults in the nick of time as it wouldn't happen now! I had hoped that when IJH died that he would get a posthumous release as death sells! I did not happen despite the fact that it's just sitting there as I believe that all the hard work has been done! Ace are supposedly issuing another Motown men collection - sometime! Oh well! #Post#: 11202-------------------------------------------------- Re: Is Motown Dead? By: Snakepit Date: October 9, 2023, 10:41 am --------------------------------------------------------- Whilst it seems that we are destined to be ignored, Motown wise, there does appear to be recent interest in Workshop Jazz CDS. Is there more of a market for Dave Hamilton and Paula Greer than Ivy Hunter? Why are they deemed suitable for release? Are these CDs genuine and Motown approved? ***************************************************** DIR Next Page
