By: halemcsharry Date: April 29, 2014, 12:15 am --------------------------------------------------------- It's a little detached now but I'd think to bring it up before it comes back in the fall- what is the deal with Waa-2? It was frustrating as a freshman because, only a week into our first quarter, it seemed to create a new upper class of freshman performers. Long before musical theatre certificate program auditions are on the radar, there's already a faction of MT kids. It seems like a really bad idea to divide the freshman class as soon as they arrive. Does anyone have any insight? #Post#: 65-------------------------------------------------- Re: Could someone explain what Waa-2 is to me? By: ericpeters Date: May 12, 2014, 4:36 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Waa-2 is a freshman subsection of the Waa-Mu team that is used to promote the upcoming show and perform new music that writers are trying out. We went into the community and sang old Waa-Mu songs to promote the show, but the main function of Waa-2 is during the writing class. When people are writing music and need to present it in the class, they give it to Waa-2 and we would sing it for the whole group. I had no idea what I was auditioning for and the only reason I auditioned is because I had -3 during winter and I wanted to do something if I couldn't do a show. I agree that it kind of splits up the new class, but I also think that it was a great way to integrate new students into the Waa-Mu family. I hope that it is better explained next year because no one really knew what it was. As far as the pre-MT certificate business, I can't speak to that because I haven't been behind the table, so I don't know how they chose who they do. But someone has to do it, so I'm sure it'll stick around. #Post#: 72-------------------------------------------------- Re: Could someone explain what Waa-2 is to me? By: samgarrott Date: May 12, 2014, 7:00 pm --------------------------------------------------------- I think something that might reduce the "us and them" vibe of Waa-2 could be to push back the audition times. Since they don't do much in fall quarter (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong in that!) that couldn't be done by other members of the Waa Mu community, would it be possible to audition them in like, mid-November so they're still chosen well in advance of the writing class, when they're most helpful? That way, they wouldn't be segmented off from the rest of the freshman class before most friendships / the freshman community as a whole has had a chance to settle in. #Post#: 73-------------------------------------------------- Re: Could someone explain what Waa-2 is to me? By: ericpeters Date: May 12, 2014, 7:15 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Auditions for Waa-2 are during winter generals, so we didn't do anything fall quarter. #Post#: 74-------------------------------------------------- Re: Could someone explain what Waa-2 is to me? By: samgarrott Date: May 12, 2014, 7:24 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Right, but that's what I'm saying -- Winter generals still occur extremely early in fall, (like the second or third week of school), and so I was asking how different it would be for the freshman if they auditioned separately, like week 7 instead. That would also help streamline the winter generals process, since a bunch of the Waa-2 auditioners are in the position you described (a winter 140-3), and that means they are essentially wasting the time of all of the other auditioning shows in the generals room. #Post#: 75-------------------------------------------------- Re: Could someone explain what Waa-2 is to me? By: ericpeters Date: May 12, 2014, 7:25 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, that's actually a really good idea. #Post#: 80-------------------------------------------------- Re: Could someone explain what Waa-2 is to me? By: halemcsharry Date: May 12, 2014, 7:54 pm --------------------------------------------------------- A later audition time might be a good fix. Not only would people be more educated about what it is but it would also alleviate intra-class divisions so early in the year. #Post#: 82-------------------------------------------------- Re: Could someone explain what Waa-2 is to me? By: amandaodasz Date: May 12, 2014, 9:11 pm --------------------------------------------------------- I definitely agree that later auditions would be better! It would help if there weren't such intense weight placed on getting into Waa-2. I remember a teacher saying that Waa-2 kids were often some of the most successful freshmen each year, and that thought really added a lot of pressure and made me (and probably a lot of others) feel really disappointed when I didn't get in. There seemed to be a suggestion as well that people in Waa-2 had a much better shot at getting into the MT program. MT auditions will naturally lead to a lot of anxiety within the freshman class, but I think it makes it worse when there is already a group that seems to be favored for it. I think it could help to alleviate feelings of a division within the freshman class if the decision for Waa-2 was not made until after the certificate program audition. Thoughts? *****************************************************
