I'm not too sure anymore of this. Before, the chronicles was
just a mere parody but it seems to have evolved into a serious
story with occasional comic relief

Is that meant to be mockery? Unless you are suggesting that the
deaths of all the characters at the end except Rita and Kiera,
and the whole deadly little 'game' or 'bet' on lives isn't dark,
then I don't know what you deem dark
The world was made not because of the bet ultimately, but to
prove a philosophical debate of whether Order or Chaos will
triumph
