Since I could also use a decent bench supply for other voltages I figured I'd go the usual route (cheapest) and make my own. I finally got the last of the needed parts yesterday so I began the assembly. All that is left to do is complete the internal wiring and that will happen tonight. I am using an old computer power supply (psu) for the internals. This will provide me with 12v, 7v, 5v and 3v supply. I found a cigar box (free from my local cigar shop) the perfect size to just fit the psu along with some external fan grills I had in the basement, a master switch ($1), and a speaker connector panel I picked up at Radio Shack on clearance for $0.87). Total investment? $2 Here it is so far: HTML http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8522/8578216615_921e87c8d2_c.jpg HTML http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8238/8579318140_6faca8a42a_c.jpg HTML http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8520/8578215413_4da584943f_c.jpg HTML http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8527/8579316988_5cbc31a57d_c.jpg On the inside it looks like this. Just remember that the wiring is not completed and will be greatly cleaned up inside: HTML http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8386/8579319550_36f30349f6_c.jpg HTML http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8386/8579320146_5c6387e8c7_c.jpg Pretty darned wesome what $2 can still buy these days! That cigar box works perfectly too and even has the health warning still on. Love it !! :) I did something similar (leaving it in it's own case though) with a PC PSU for a +12v supply. It kept turning itself off! that's when I realised you need a load on the +5v rail lol. All works fine now :D Thanks for sharing.. Very nice work #Post#: 309-------------------------------------------------- Re: $2 DIY Bench Power Supply By: Chicago X Date: April 1, 2013, 11:12 am --------------------------------------------------------- This build is so cool; I love how everything fit together so nicely. I would assemble one myself, but Wifey has forbidden me to make anything with mains power after the last, um, incident. #Post#: 652-------------------------------------------------- Re: $2 DIY Bench Power Supply By: MRsDNF Date: April 17, 2013, 5:51 am --------------------------------------------------------- I love this build JohnnyMac and have read it a dozen times. I've a brand new Thermaltake 600 watt power supply here l bought for a PC repair and never used. I'm not sure whether to attempt your mod to use on my hobby charger in the off chance l wont bugger it or keep it for testing. *****************************************************
