"In Memoriam" is almost classical in nature. 'Cool' is a good word to describe it. Personally, I think it's a little too cool - it lacks spark - but it's a very easy album to listen to. The title piece was written by John Lewis for his piano teacher who had passed away about a year previously. It could however, have been in memoriam to the Modern Jazz Quartet themselves, since it was their last studio recording before breaking up.
