I don't see why not, since Sync does have its own NNTP service.

It appears that unless you set a "Newsgroup name" value for an area via scfg, 
the newsgroup names presented to clients are dynamically generated based on the
internal codes of the group and message area.  (So if you want, say,
alt.bbs.sysop to appear as such for clients, you'd need to set that value for
the relevant area.)
