Several years back Oprah Winfrey had funded a Leadership Academy / boarding
school for girls from impoverished backgrounds in South Africa.  When it
opened, they had to overcome negative cultural behaviors their parents had
practiced.  Some of these behaviors involved physical and emotional abuse
intended to assert authority, as if they were afraid of their daughters
becoming smarter or "better" than them.
