Subj : Groceries To : Dave Drum From : Ruth Haffly Date : Fri Jun 10 2022 16:29:11 Hi Dave, DD> Certainly. But my friend Les is in the early stages which put it at DD> the front of my mind. And my grandmother went effectively blind from DD> it. As my chief entertainment is reading ... and I don't care for DD> audio books it's a matter of some concern. RH> Understandable why it's on your mind then. I've never tried audio books RH> but don't think I'd be as satisfied as with a real book. DD> I tried Amazon's free trial for audio books and found them to be DD> lacking (for me) on several fronts. If I am driving it's hard to pay DD> attention DD> to the material/storyline. If I am at home and playing the audio book DD> in the background - both the audio book and my other activity suffer. I can see both sides of it, makes me think that audio books aren't the way to go. We just wrapped up a 6,000+ mile trip, listened to a lot of Patriot talk radio, some Nashville country and some old time classic radio. DD> OTOH - the earliest form of audio story telling - Old Time Radio - is DD> stiil used by me .... and enjoyed. Episodes of Drangnet, Green Hornet, DD> Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and Sherlock Holmes are all listened to and DD> enjoyed by yours truly, Dave Drum. Bv)= We listened to a number of old shows on this current trip, a good one yesterday was Bob Hope with guests Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. DD> on-line order a minimum of U$25 worth of items they will pick your DD> order, bag/box it and load it into your vehicle for you. If you DD> order U$100 worth delivery to your door is free. RH> We still do our shopping in person. DD> I shop in person for meats and produce. But, it's great for staple DD> items and canned goods. My old legs are not a big fan of big box DD> stores and I'm too darned proud to use a motorised cart. RH> Maybe you need to try a "ride 'em" cart. They are a help; I used one RH> for a while after I broke my foot. Main disadvantage was trying to RH> reach something on upper shelves; you'll need a helper or a grab stick RH> for that. DD> I've used one a few times. Lastly when I had the broken ankle. If I DD> was after more than would fit into the little basket of my "knee DD> scooter" I got a motorised cart. But I still felt like a fish out of DD> water. I did too, but it was a help after I broke a foot (rebroke six months later), and also had the knee replacement. DD> I used to get just a shopping basket if only going for a few things. DD> Now I always get a cart - even if it's a mini-cart. And use it as a DD> "walker" as I prowl the store looking for items. I don't need the "walker" yet. My dad used to use a ride 'em but Mom would push a regular cart; Dad didn't trust her "driving". For a while, it got to the point where he'd have her sit up front while he shopped, then she stayed at home (with an aide) while he shopped. Finally she went into a nursing home, about that time my brother started doing most of the shopping for Dad. After Mom died & Dad had ememrgency surgery a couple months later, he went into a nursing home and no grocery shopping was needed. DD> Now the only stores not doing some form of that are WallyWorld and the DD> no-frills places like Sav-A-Lot and ALDI. RH> We have an Aldi in town but usually, if we need something (mostly non RH> grocery), we go to Lidl as it's close by, just up the hill a bit from RH> Wegman's. Steve was thinking of replacing our camper induction cook RH> plate (from Aldi) but we don't get their flier, do get Lidl. Told him RH> to start looking at the weekly on line flier from Aldi. DD> Lidl and ALDI have common ancestry. We only have ALDI here. We did for a while, Lidl opened up about 5 years ago. DD> Hy-Vee is a sorta-kinda Midwestern Wegmans. RH> Sounds well worth exploring. DD> My house mate shops WallyWorld and Ruler Foods (Krogers no-frills DD> deal) and thinks he's saving money "big-time". HAH! By watching the DD> sales and adverts I do as well or better at the high-end, full service DD> places. RH> Same as we trust Wegman's house brands over a lot of the lower end RH> stores around us. DD> I used to subscribe to Wegman's e-flyer and compare prices/selection DD> to my local stores' weekly adverts.
