Subj : Old Tyme Radio was:Groceries To : Dave Drum From : Ruth Haffly Date : Thu Jun 16 2022 11:52:11 Hi Dave, DD> name I remember is the (now retired) Pastor from the local Central DD> Baptist Church - Dr. Adam Baum. He and Rabbi Abromowicz are the DD> ones who got the Interfaith Christmas Breakfast established as DD> a Springfield tradition. He was also the head of our local anti- DD> war group - which given his name led to all manner of crude jokes DD> and japes. RH> I'm not surprised. Makes one wonder if his folks thought it thru went RH> they decided on his name or it was happenstance. Either way, it sounds RH> like he did well, teaming with the rabbi for an interfaith Christmas RH> breakfast. DD> Since he was older than me - and I pre-date the atom bomb - I'd hazard DD> a guess that it was coincidence. Souds like it. It is an attention getter tho. DD> Also Fred Allem and Jack Benny. Or Fibber McGee and Molly or Lum & DD> Abner. RH> We've not caught the last one but have heard the others. On the way RH> west, one day we caught a 5 part broadcast. It had originally been RH> broadcast over 5 weeks but they did it back to back for about 2 1/2 RH> hours of an interesting "whodunit". DD> Lum & Abner was a 15 minute radio "sit-com" supposedly broadcast from DD> the "Jot 'em Down" store in the (mythical) town of Pine Ridge, DD> Arkansas. It was the first network program broadcast from Radio City DD> in New York DD> (1933). The first to do a marathon charity broadcast and the first to DD> make a transatlantic "simulcast" with Lum in London and Abner in DD> Chicago. RH> Sounds like quite a team. (G) DD> Here's a link to over 1600 episodes - I dare you to listen to one and DD> not get "hooked". tinyurl.com/LUMNABNER RH> Probably best I not start listening then. Got enough irons in the fire RH> right now--home for a bit but will be up in VT before the end of the RH> month. In the meantime, I picked up a rush alterations job from one of RH> the young men at our church. DD> I use OTR as entertainment that doesn't require constant attention nor DD> concentration. The Lum & Abner episodes are 15 minutes long (mostly) DD> and don't tackle any "heavy" subjects. Thing is, with the older shows, I need to give it most of my attention to catch everything. Part of that may be from just listening to it in the truck, outside noises do make it harder to hear. Still, when using a knife to cut up stuff for supper (last night was red bell pepper, onion and mushroom, sauteed, then chicken apple sausage (precooked) added in), I want to be able to concnetrate on that. I served the above with brown rice, dessert was ice cream at Lumpy's (in town place, he makes all his own, including extracts, etc used, part of the 2019 picnic). DD> Radio then jazz or classic rock. We have enough other sounds in the house--Steve's radios, 3 chiming clocks, a cuckoo clock, etc........ DD> Interestingly - Lum and Abner was modelled on Waters, Arkansas where DD> Chester Lauck (Lum) and Norris Goff (Abner) grew up. That town is now DD> named "Pine Ridge" because of the radio show. Anywhere near Dogpatch? (G) --- Catch you later, Ruth rchaffly{at}earthlink{dot}net FIDO 1:396/45.28 .... There cannot be a crisis today; my schedule is already full. --- PPoint 3.01 * Origin: Sew!
