It will help launch what's considered the second wave of feminism in the United States. MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06 Title: Apple Brown Betty Friedan Categories: Breads, Fruits, Spices, Dairy, Booze Yield: 8 servings 2 c Cubed, day-old bread 1 c Light brown sugar 1/2 ts Cinnamon 1/2 ts Nutmeg 1/2 ts Allspice 1 ts Salt 1 Lemon; juice & zest; - separated 1 ts Vanilla 6 Granny Smith apples; peeled, - thin sliced 1/2 c Apple brandy 4 tb Unsalted butter; thin sliced - divided Whipped cream; to serve Set oven @ 350ºF/175ºC. Grease an 8" x 8" baking dish. Spread cubed bread onto a baking sheet and toast for 8 to 10 minutes until dry. Pulse through a food processor until coarse. Layer 1/3 of the crumbs into the greased baking dish. In a small bowl, combine sugar, spices, salt, and zest of lemon; set aside. In another bowl, combine lemon juice, vanilla, and apples. Spread half of the apples on top of the breadcrumbs and pour 1/4 cup of apple brandy evenly over the apples. Layer another third of crumbs and the remaining apples and apple brandy (or juice). Cover with the remaining crumbs. Dot the top of the crumb mixture with the butter. Bake the brown betty for about an hour, or until the liquid starts bubbling and the crust starts to brown.
