What RH> helped was the gift of a 3 burner stove from one aunt for Christmas. I use Coleman (type) stoves at chilli cook-offs. Haven't been camping for yonks. But we did a mix of wood fires (spit cooking and dutch ovens) and camp stoves - either Sterno or Coleman. It's more fun sitting around a fire (or even the embers) and telling tall tales/ghost stories than around an aseptic propane stove. And it's hard to toast marshmallows over a Coleman. It can be done but it's just not the same.
