Add onion and garlic and saute for 3 minutes. add carrots, celery and red bell pepper and cook for another 3 minutes. stir in cumin, oregano, paprika, and red pepper flakes, and cook for 1 minute. stir in jalepenos, broth & tomatoes and bring to a boil. cook, reduce heat and simmer for another 30 minutes. add beans and tomato paste and cook covered for another 15 minutes. stir in brown sugar, salt and pepper. NOTES: the longer you can cook this and let it simmer the yummier it will be. its delicious and we make it all winter long- very good comfort food. It also makes tons (TONS!)of leftovers, so you can have it again and again, and its even better reheated! Now, to add a little something special, you can subsitute a 1 12 oz bottle of dark beer for the broth when you add the tomatoes & jalepenos, it makes it that much more yummier.
