The new law bars racial segregation in public places, and discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The legislation was proposed by President John F. Kennedy in June 1963, but it was opposed by filibuster in the Senate. After Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed the bill forward. The United States House of Representatives passed the bill on February 10, 1964, and after a 72-day filibuster, it passed the United States Senate on June 19, 1964. The final vote was 290-130 in the House of Representatives and 73-27 in the Senate. After the House agreed to a subsequent Senate amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law by President Johnson at the White House on July 2, 1964 MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06 Title: Lyndon Johnson's Favorite Barbecue Sauce Categories: Sauces Yield: 1 1/4 cups 1/4 c Butter 1/4 c Cider vinegar 1/4 c Ketchup 1/4 c Lemon juice 1/4 c Worcestershire sauce 1/2 ts Tabasco sauce Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.
