08 July 1947 - PAPERS REPORT A PECULIAR CRASH IN NEW MEXICO DESERT:
Newspapers report the capture of a "flying saucer" at a ranch near the
town of Roswell and question the US military's story about the crash of
a weather balloon. In the 1990s the military will finally reveal that a
top-secret nuclear test-monitoring balloon was recovered at the site.

The "Roswell incident", or simply "Roswell", was the July 1947 recovery
of metallic and rubber debris from a military balloon by Roswell Army
Air Field personnel, who issued a press release announcing possession of
a "flying disc". Decades later, conspiracy theories claimed that debris
from an alien spaceship had been covered up by the government. In
response, in 1994 the United States Air Force published a report
concluding the crashed object was a top secret nuclear test surveillance
balloon from Project Mogul.

The Roswell incident took place during the flying disc craze of 1947,
sparked by widespread media coverage of pilot Kenneth Arnold's alleged
sighting. Amid hundreds of reports nationwide, on July 8, 1947, Roswell
Army Air Field's press release was broadcast via wire transmission. The
Army quickly retracted the release, falsely stating the crashed object
was merely a conventional weather balloon

      Title: Flying Saucer Sandwiches

      Yield: 4 serviings

    150 g  Chicken tenderloins
    1/4 c  Greek yoghurt
      8 sl Wholemeal bread
    1/2 c  Iceberg lettuce; fine shred
          
  With a little homemade flair, this sandwich recipe with
  succulent chicken tenderloins, Greek-style yoghurt and
  lettuce will keep fussy eaters happy.

  Bring a small saucepan of water to the boil over high
  heat. Reduce heat to medium. Add chicken and simmer,
  uncovered, for 6 minutes or until chicken is cooked
  through. Remove chicken from pan and transfer to a
  board. Using 2 forks, finely shred chicken.

  Combine chicken and yoghurt in a small bowl. Season with
  pepper.

  Using a 9cm (3 1/2") round cutter, cut 8 rounds from
  bread slices. Place lettuce in centre of 4 rounds. Top
  with chicken mixture. Using your fingers, flatten
  remaining rounds slightly, then place over chicken
  mixture. Seal edges with a fork. Serve.
