Add the sugar, salt, and 1/2 the flour. Beat 2 minutes with mixer. Add egg and shortening. Stir in half of remaining flour with a wooden spoon and mix well. When the mixture has formed a ball and breaks away from the sides of the bowl, roll it out on a floured board and dust lightly with flour. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, approximately 10 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl and turn to coat the surface. Cover the bowl and set it in a warm, draft-free place to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 to 2 hours. Punch down dough with the fist and knead gently about 3 minutes. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a 15x9-inch rectangle about 3/4 inch thick. Cut into pieces about 1 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches long. Transfer to another board or cookie sheet to rise in a warm place until almost double. Deep fry several at a time in a heavy pan with 4 inches of oil heated to 375 F, turning to brown each side. Drain on absorbent paper, and frost with mapline frosting. Mix frosting ingredients together and spread on maple bars. Recipe by Winnie Lillie MMMMM .
