20 July 1969 - ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND AS ARMSTRONG WALKS ON MOON:
NASA's Apollo 11 Lunar Module lands 238,855 miles from Earth in the Sea
of Tranquility and six hours later astronaut Neil Armstrong exits the
vehicle, descends a short ladder, and becomes the first human to walk on
the moon. Minutes later, astronaut Buzz Aldrin will join Armstrong on
the surface. Millions back home tune in to the historic event.

Upon landing on the surface, with millions of eyes watching history
being written, Neil Armstrong hopped down the ladder and said, "That is
one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The Apollo 11
astronauts used the lunar module called Eagle to reach the surface.

Armstrong actually said "It's some kind of gray, powdery stuff." before
the well-known declamation. I have it on tape. -- UDD

      Title: Moon Pies
 Categories: Snacks, Cookies, Chocolate, Dairy
      Yield: 24 Moon pies
 
    1/2 c  Butter; softened
      1 c  White sugar
      1 lg Egg
      1 c  Evaporated milk
      1 ts Vanilla extract
      2 c  All-purpose flour
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/2 c  Unsweetened cocoa powder
  1 1/2 ts Baking soda
    1/2 ts Baking powder
    1/2 c  Butter; softened
      1 c  Confectioners' sugar
    1/2 ts Vanilla extract
      1 c  Marshmallow creme
 
  Set oven @ 400-|F/205-|C.
  
  Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  
  TO MAKE COOKIE CRUSTS: In a large mixing bowl, cream
  together 1/2 cup butter and white sugar. Add egg,
  evaporated milk, and vanilla. Mix well. In a separate
  bowl, mix together flour, salt, cocoa powder, baking
  soda, and baking powder. Add flour mixture slowly to
  sugar mixture while stirring. Mix just until all
  ingredients are combined.
  
  Drop the dough onto greased cookie sheet by rounded
  tablespoonfuls. Leave at least 3" in between each one;
  dough will spread as it bakes.
  
  Bake in preheated oven for 6 to 8 minutes, until firm when
  pressed with finger. Allow to cool at least one hour
  before filling.
  
  TO MAKE MARSHMALLOW FILLING: In a medium mixing bowl,
  blend together 1/2 cup butter, confectioners' sugar,
  flavored extract, and marshmallow creme. Mix until
  smooth.
  
  Assemble pies by spreading 1 to 2 tablespoonfuls of
  filling on flat side of a cookie crust, then covering
  filling with flat side of another cookie crust.
  
  NOTE: In the south RC Cola is the preferred beverage
  to accompany a Moon Pie.
