23 August 1945 - WWII HERO MARCARIO GARCÍA AWARDED MEDAL OF HONOR: For
outstanding bravery in the European theater, Staff Sergeant Marcario
García becomes the first Mexican immigrant awarded the highest personal
military honor by President Truman. Back home in Texas he won't be so
appreciated: When he's denied service for his ethnicity at a
Houston-area restaurant, he'll be arrested after fighting with the
owner. After the Hispanic community unites in his defense, the charges
will be dropped in 1946. García will become an American citizen shortly
thereafter.

He was also awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Combat
Infantryman's Badge for the U.S., as well as the medal of Merito Militar
in Mexico.

      Title: The Ultimate Hero Burger
 Categories: Beef. pork, Vegetables, Cheese, Sauces
      Yield: 4 servings
 
      2 tb Oil
      1 lg Onion; thin sliced
      4    (6 oz ea) pre-formed
           - burgers
      4 sl Cheddar cheese
    1/2 c  Mayonnaise
      4    Kaiser rolls; halved
      4    Pieces leaf lettuce
      4 sl Tomato
    1/4 c  Sliced pickles
      8 sl Crispy cooked bacon
 
  Heat grill on medium-high heat.
  
  In a large skillet over medium heat on your stovetop,
  heat oil until hot; saute onion 10 to 15 minutes or
  until caramelized, stirring occasionally.
  
  Meanwhile, cook burgers on your grill 5 to 6 minutes per
  side or to desired doneness (145 degrees).
  
  Place a slice of cheese on top of each burger, close the
  top of the grill, and continue to cook until the cheese
  melts.
  
  Spread mayonnaise on each roll half, layer bottom of
  rolls each with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion,
  burger, pickles, and bacon. Finish it off with the top
  of the bun. Serve immediately.
