MP> I have seen some reports that it will be this time next year, or MP> later, before they get I-40 and I-26 fixed. Were the two lanes of 40 MP> that were not washed out stable enough that they could allow 2-way MP> traffic, or are they also closed? Personally, I wouldn't want to travel on the two remaining lanes until the area around the highway was well stabilised and a barrier set up between the road and the water. Right now they're just beginning to assess damages and start debating what to do. I've read some folks think that this section of I-40 needs to be re-routed to avoid the problems it has had over the years; that would be very expensive and time consuming but when you look at how many times that section of road has been closed, it starts to make sense. I'll keep y'all updated on recovery progress in western NC; a lot has been done (mostly by non governmental sources) and a whole lot more is yet to be done. Meanwhile, we're in western NY for a few days; I enjoyed a beef on 'weck sandwich followed by a slice of chocolate mousse pie for supper tonight.
