Subj : Discounts [1] To : Dave Drum From : Ruth Haffly Date : Sat Jul 26 2025 14:33:33 Hi Dave, DD> Murphy is *always* there. Waiting ..... RH> Lurking in the dark recesses of the hard drive, most likely. DD> Murphy is responsible for me being able to reply to this (and three DD> other) post. Seems the BBS drive on Sean's confuser went "wonky". DD> And the replacement still had the posts I had "fat fingered" into the DD> bit-bucket yesterday. Good; we tried a resend but it didn't work. RH> We used to shop at Lowe's (grocery) when we lived on the other side of RH> town; it was the most convenient and best option for us. Not the low DD> Lowe's food stores is a sorta=kinda local to you chain being head DD> quartered in Cigaretteville (Winston-Salem). Lowe's Home Improverment DD> is somewhat more to the west in Mooresville ... and has spread much DD> further than the grocery stores/ We actually found a Lowe's (grocery) out in Tucumcari, NM. They said they'd no affiliation with the chain but we saw several items that had the house brand name that the store uses so........... (store brand gas) DD> And you can bet I was as close to "on fumes" as I dared get before RH> I DD> got the next tankful. RH> Understandable; you have to get your money's worth. RH> Sounds like a good deal. Harris Teeter is heavily promoting their RH> rewards program on tv--so many gas points for shopping and quadruple RH> points on Fridays. Good if you shop there regularly but if we go, we RH> try to go on Thursdays, their senior discount day. I guess you can get RH> up to a dollar off per gallon. DD> Just have to do the math. Do you $ave more on groceries or on gas? RH> Usually groceries as we don't shop there often enough to accumulate RH> enough in fuel rewards before they expire. DD> The other thing to take into account is where the fuel savings my be DD> applied. My Meijer store (the people Sam Walton copied when starting DD> Wallyworld) offers huge discounts on fuel prices. But only at *their* DD> gas station. HT and Lowe's have at least one affiliate and some stores have a station on the same premisis. Made it convenient when we shopped and needed gas but we shopped more often than needing gas so the rewards built up. RH> I'm sure he appreciates it. Most often we get our gas locally at Sam's RH> Club or if in Raleigh, Costco. When we were in Hawaii over July 4 week RH> end, we rented a car, gassed it up at the Scofield Barracks gas station RH> Monday morning. Then we drove (almost) around the island, topped it off RH> at the Pearl Harbor gas station. Didn't even take a gallon the 2nd RH> time. DD> Was the car a hybrid? A (near) lap of Oahu is a fair trot. RH> It was a Mitsubishi Mirage. We were stuck in stop and go traffic RH> (mostly stop, then short go, then long stop again) for a while on the RH> North Shore. What should have taken maybe half an hour, tops, took RH> close to 2 hours to get thru. We'd had an early lunch but stopped for RH> an early afternoon munchie after getting out of that mess. DD> Still, I'd think even a hybrid would burn more than a gallon on a DD> circuit of the island. Actually, we started in the middle of the island (Schofield Barracks), went up to the North Shore from there and eastward around the windward side. We'd gone up to the North Shore and around the leeward side a couple of days before. Lots of memories, including pineapple whips at the Dole Plantation. DD> Title: Roasted Garlic & Herb Shrimp w/Spaghetti DD> Categories: Seafood, Pasta, Herbs, Sauces, Chilies DD> Yield: 4 Servings RH> Lots of carbs but it looks good. Personally, I'd use less red pepper RH> and let diners add more to their own taste. DD> a half-teaspoon in that much shrimp and pasta is fairly mild. Now, if DD> it were cayenne .... that would be a different story. A ifferent red DD> pepper: RH> It's still something I usually go easy on and let people add to taste. RH> Same with black pepper and salt; I know, common condiments but better RH> off in small quantities. DD> So if I ever eat at your house I'd better bring my lunch holster. It's DD> a clip-on to a belt or waist-band leather item with a small shaker of DD> crushed red pepper, a small bottle of Cholula and a small bottle of DD> Trappey's Red Devil. We have a good selection of spices, including several hot sauces and crushed red pepper. Just have to ask. Cut way down on salt decades ago, black pepper is usually a good guess-tamite shading slightly under the full amount and letting other herbs/spices shine thru. DD> Got this from Hy-Vee - it is high on my list to convert from archives DD> to kitchen. Bv)= DD> Title: Strip Steak Tacos DD> Categories: Beef, Bread, Fruits, Chilies, Citrus DD> Yield: 6 servings DD> MMMMM--------------------QUICK MANGO SALSA--------------------------- DD> 1 c Fresh mango DD> 2 tb Chopped red onions DD> 2 tb Chopped red bell pepper DD> 1 tb Fresh cilantro DD> 1 tb Fresh lime juice DD> 1 tb Fresh jalapeno Looks good but for the cilantro; that's not allowed in the house.
