At another time you wrote:

"you can be completely free to set formatting here, bold, italic, underline, and it will be correctly displayed on the Fido side."

Is there a way to command the bot to recognize text that ought to be fixed-length ARRIVING from the Fido side?  ..or is that an impossible/bad idea?

The bookended use of * _ and / have been well adopted for:

Bold = *bold*
Underline = _underline_
Italic = /italic/

Perhaps you can invent a control symbol for fixed-length?

Suggestion, the "=" could work.

eg:

Fixed-length = =fixed-length=
