I have one pretty vivud memory from age 3 or 4. We lived in a little
farmhouse in southeast Kansas. It was my birthday, and my mom was making a
chocolate cake.  She left the kitchen for a few minutes, and I climbed up
onto the counter and started eatting the batter in the mixing bowl, while
watching one of my mother's uncles walking around the yard out the window.
