Seriously, it was in Rome where acronyms got their unabbreviated start, with SPQR -- Senatus Populousque Romanus -- Senate And People Of Rome. One of the 2 research papers I did in college that I enjoyed doing, was on acronyms (the other was on hurricanes). For the rest of them, I had the attitude "Why should I study about the American Revolution?? I know who won".
