How is "user" more informal than "person" in this context?  And why would it be a problem?

"User" seems totally reasonable.  It refers to the person using the BBS.  "Person" might be a little too general or ambiguous.  I'm not sure how "person" would make more sense here.  Could you give some examples from text.dat where you think "person" would make more sense?
