Subj : Square/Round Dance News To : All From : Daryl Stout Date : Thu Oct 14 2021 19:57:08 A few items concerning the release of the e-Edition of the November, 2021 issue of "The Modern Square", the monthly publication of the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation (ASSDF): 1) Even though today (the 14th of the month) would normally be the deadline for items for the next issue...the release date will be DELAYED until sometime Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2021, for the following reasons: A) Thunderstorms are forecast here overnight into Friday evening, so that means no computer work at all, including checking the Editor's Email. I don't want a renegade lightning strike taking out both of my computers (item C below). Some storms rolled through earlier, and more are forecast to develop within the hour. So, I'm trying to finish what BBS related tasks I can before shutting everything down for the night and Friday. B) Another hobby that I do, amateur radio, has me doing traffic nets on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. As a side note, there are "dancing hams"...and at one event 25 years ago, I used amateur radio to save the life of our shuttle bus driver...telling the dancers "this is what ham radio operators prepare for...emergency communications". The reason it's noted as "amateur radio" is that per Federal Law (Title 47 of the Code Of Federal Regulations, Part 97), with very rare exceptions, we are prohibited from accepting money or compensation for our services. C) I have to do a much needed backup on the BBS (desktop) computer, and my laptop computer (the latter where I do my ham radio traffic net applications), on Saturday morning. This way, I can recover data in the event of a crash or system failure. Recently, on my laptop computer (item B above), I had to reinstall Windows 10 64-bit, to rebuild the registry, as it had gotten severely corrupted. D) I will be attending a local square dance on Saturday evening. Representatives from 501 Life Magazine, a publication covering 11 counties in central Arkansas, will be at the dance at the Saline County Fairgrounds, for the Bluebird Squares club, doing a story. I also have notified the Arkansas Department Of Parks And Tourism on that. One dancer had told me that the website for the Arkansas Department Of Parks And Tourism had the former URL for the site (theassdf.org -- that domain has since expired). The correct web domain is arkansassquaredance.com The dancer apparently gave me the wrong website organization, or I mis-dialed the number, as I got a telemarketer/scammer instead. Thankfully, I got disconnected, and they didn't get any of my personal payment information. I sent a reply email to the Arkansas Department Of Parks And Tourism, telling about the ASSDF, and a brief history of square and round dancing in Arkansas. Weather permitting, I will call them on Friday, to provide additional information. So, the "delay" will allow me to get additional news items and photos (the latter for the e-Edition). 2) With a large amount of pictures in the e-Edition (at least 150 total, possibly more) from several dances, including: A) Bluebird Squares Spaghetti Dinner And Dance, Benton B) Maverick Mixers 50's/Subscription Dance, Little Rock C) ASSDF Fall Festival, Texarkana D) Bluebird Squares 501 Life Magazine Dance, Benton The abundance of photos has made the e-Edition (in PDF format) for November, 2021, at least 30 megabytes in size. Since some ISP's have restrictions on the size of file attachments, I likely will NOT be able to attach the file to the email blast message that I will send out, once it is released. Instead, I likely will provide the URL for such, once I upload the file, and update the website. While the print edition is $20 per year (some dancers want a "hard copy", but some don't have, can't get, or don't want, a computer, cellphone, email, or internet access), the e-Edition is free of charge. You can get on the email list for it (plus updates on square and round dancing in Arkansas), by sending an email to assdfmodernsquare at gmail dot com -- with your name, and letting me know you want the e-Edition. Back issues of the e-Edition are in their own file area on The Thunderbolt BBS. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by the "delay". My goal is normally to release the e-Edition on the 15th of the month, prior to the month of issue...and to send the print edition data to the printer...so it can be printed, mailed, and delivered by the 1st of the month of issue. But, extenuating circumstances this month, are the reason for the delay.
