I'm thinking they don't.  It seems the average computer user of today 
knows barely more than how to press or tap buttons -- everything else 
has to be automatically done for them.

I got started in computers years prior with hobbyist electronics. 
Admittedly not the textbook way but sufficient to troubleshoot and 
repair.  ...On to computers, back when RAM was inserting all those black 
Chicklets on a board with a chip inserter!
