Subj : Various Things (2) To : Daryl Stout From : Barry Martin Date : Wed Jan 25 2023 07:43:00 Hi Daryl (2)! DS> I farted in my wallet...now, I have gas money. BM> That joke stunk! DS> If I could create cash that way, I'd order a pallet of Bush's DS> Baked Beans (which I hear are quite good), get the "secret DS> formula" from Duke, and also tell OPEC what they could do with DS> their gas prices! You forgot some of the oil and gas is extracted here in the U.S. DS> Sounds like the sign at the local fast food restaurant: DS> "Now Hiring Smiling Faces For Afternoon Shifts" -- the problem DS> was, they FORGOT the F in shifts. But, I guess you need coffee DS> beforehand to "move things along" (boy, this thread is turning DS> crappy, and is dung for). Constipation! (No sh--!) BM> No suggestions: too many variables. You already do the short activity BM> spurts, medications, etc. DS> Especially with being on Lasix, for at least 5 hours after I DS> take it. Some people time things my meals, others by medications.... DS> Be right back...the doorbell is ringing, and it's not the one DS> at the house. :P Didn't even notice you had gone! BM> I think I'd be finding an alternative. Adult tricycle with some sort BM> of cart for putting groceries and other stuff in. Around here would BM> need to motorized so maybe a scooter (don't recall one with a cart). BM> (Locally a lot of hills.) DS> I don't think I'd have the strength to get on one, let alone to DS> be able to balance myself on one. I's also need a motorized one, though if possible one I could pedal (on that flatter streets) to get some exercise, then flip over the motor for when I get to the 1% incline. BM> The balance issue is why I was thinking three wheels. ...Was watching BM> _Pawn Stars_ the other day and someone brought in something you could BM> use: was a three-wheeled electric-powered vehicle, think I remember the BM> top speed being about 40 MPH. Looked like someone started with a golf BM> cart frame and added sheet metal to mostly enclose. They indicated it BM> was street-worthy -- Rick (the main guy) mentioned he'd hate being in BM> an accident as probably crush like a Coke can. I also noticed there BM> didn't seem any place for a licence plate. DS> The thing is, being "in the open" like that makes you DS> vulnerable to the criminal and weather elements. In many cities, DS> they're relaxing the fight on crime, so criminals are having a DS> field day. Underfunding, understaffing.... BM> If no need then no need. Some people 'go wild' with credit cards, BM> thinking it 'free money' -- until have to pay it back. ...I write down BM> all transactions in a ledger - yes, literally pen and paper. The money BM> becomes a visible, so physical, entity again to me. DS> The debit card works just like a credit card, and the money is DS> taken out of the account right then...no worry about interest DS> fees. Yet, Congress has maxed out their debt limit card, and the DS> Democrats are wanting any and all restrictions to be lifted on DS> borrowing. The thing is, the money is now "fiat", meaning it's DS> not worth the paper it's printed on. I had heard Social Security and some other payments are probably going to be in jeopardy of not being paid if the government goes into default. I've also heard Social Security is self-funded and so does not rely on government funding. As for the value of the paper, I pretty much always took it as a symbol -- 'trade balance-outer'. I work an hour and get $5 for the labour. I want to buy a hamburger and don't have to work for them too but instead give $1. I know money used to be based on gold, but gold was also a balancer-outer: an hour of work was worth so much gold. ...I'd probably would have been a lousy Economics professor! DS> I had to change debit cards a year ago, because Uber kept DS> slamming it (they never sent the driver), and my bank shut it off DS> as "fraud". As a result, I almost couldn't get home from an DS> ambulatory run to the local Emergency Room, when I was diagnosed DS> with congestive heart failure. I now use Lyft, but just one DS> roundtrip to the Post Office Box, with a $5 tip for the driver No clue: I haven't needed to use a bus nor taxi in years, and no experience with the ride-shares. DS> each way (they likely aren't rolling in money), can run $35. So, DS> I just use Lyft twice a month, and otherwise stay home all the DS> time. I did discover my HMO will offer transportation to and from DS> medical appointments, which will help some...but at least I can DS> get my groceries and medications delivered. Yes, make use of those 'freebies'! DS> I just got a note in the mail from Terminix, that the bank put DS> a restricting hold on the card, but I took myself off of DS> auto-pay, in case I needed to cancel the service for a month (I DS> get a quarterly treatment for pest control, yearly for termite DS> control, and twice a month from April through October for DS> mosquito control). With it being winter, I saw no need to have DS> the January servicing done. So, I have to call them, and explain DS> to them what's going on. Timing makes sense. BM> It started snowing here last night (Saturday 01.21.23) -- so far maybe BM> a little over an inch. Looks like finishing up -- will shovel later BM> this morning. DS> Power went out briefly here this morning...they are expecting DS> widespread outages where the heavy snow falls, plus winds could DS> gust near 50 mph over much of the state through early Wednesday. DS> Had that surface area of low pressure tracked further southeast DS> than what is forecast, we'd be getting snow instead of just a DS> cold rain, with some thunderstorms. Along the Gulf Coast from DS> Texas through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and into the DS> Florida panhandle through tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 24), there's an DS> enhanced risk for tornadoes. The South has had some nasty weather! Snowing here this morning (Wednesday, 01.25.23) -- looks to be just under an inch. No power outages, haven't had a 'beep!' from the UPSs in a while, though yesterday morning before the sun came up it looked like as across the street (on a different power grid) may have had an outage as everybody was dark -- just didn't have any outside visible lights on. ¯ BarryMartin3@ ® ¯ @MyMetronet.NET ® ....
