Subj : Network Notwork To : All From : Ky Moffet Date : Sun Jun 23 2019 20:43:00 So I have this collection of random PCs on a Windows workgroup. Objective: share the root of the drive. WinXP -- no problem, can share the root of a drive, and everything on it is accessable (except the Windows directory itself). XP64 -- no problem, ditto. Win7Pro and Win10somerandomrelease -- go through the motions but nothing happens, even when I'm using the hidden admin account. I can share a directory, but not the root (of any drive, not just the boot drive). Root shows as shared, but variously swears at intruders and won't let them see anything, or asks for login credentials, which don't exist. (The homegroup password that it concocted does not work. Besides, this is not using the Homegroup.) The XP boxen firmly believe there is a share named "C" (which should be C root) but that gets a big Keep Out. However they can see /Users/Public. My workaround has been to put as much as possible in C:\!Shared, and share that. But it's a nuisance, especially since I have to do it for every partition. My Google-fu tells me this is a common (tho not universal) problem, but solutions are a crapshoot and mostly don't work. I'm guessing this is in fact a bug but whether it manifests depends on what order you did stuff... more likely if you do things in the obvious order. Part Two: the linux box (PCLinuxOS with KDE desktop). It's had Samba installed according to the directions, and refers to itself as Samba-Server. It can see the WinBoxen, as far as they can see one another (tho occasionally demands a login; on a hunch I tried my *linux* admin creds and that works, temporarily, wtf). The WinBoxen all know it's there but can't see anything on it. This is all the same whether wired or wireless (to modem/router). Everything works otherwise. They all can do internet. My brain hurts. þ RNET 2.10U: ILink: Techware BBS þ Hollywood, Ca þ www.techware2k.com --- QScan/PCB v1.20a / 01-0462 * Origin: ILink: CFBBS | cfbbs.no-ip.com | 856-933-7096 (454:1/1) .
