I would like an option that blocked area code+exchange combinations. 
There are a couple of combos in my area code that I know will always be a
spam call.  They change the last 4 digits, making it difficult to block on 
a per-number basis, but the first 6 digits are always the same.
 
Barring that, the setup you describe sounds nice (so long as it doesn't
catch someone you don't mean for it to!).  The thing with these spammers
is that, if you don't answer, they (or their system) will wait until after 
the beep before hanging up, so you get a lot of empty voicemails.  I
cannot remember the last time someone left me a legit voicemail!
 
To prevent this, I will usually answer, wait a second or two for the
connection to be made, and then hang up.  No talking to spammers and no
annoying voicemail beeps.
